Accessing Rx

There are three ways to access the oscarRx prescriptions module:

  1. Appointment Bar
  2. Main Demographic Page
  3. Patient’s eChart

Appointment Bar

  1. From the schedule screen choose the Rx button on the patient’s appointment bar.

Main Demographic Page

  1. From the patient’s appointment bar or from patient search results screen, choose M, for the Main Demographic Record
  2. Select Prescriptions under the Clinical Modules Heading

Patient’s eChart

  1. From the patients appointment bar choose E for the Encounter Section
  2. Select Medication to open oscarRx
  3. OR select “+” and open oscarRx with all long term meds reordered

Quick Overview of Creating a Prescription:

  1. Open the prescribing screen (see Accessing Rx above)
  2. Enter the name of the drug you want to prescribe and select it from the dropdown list (or click CustomDrug if it does show on the list)
  3. Enter the instructions and quantity/repeats
  4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for any additional drugs you want to add to this prescription (the Drug Name box is always there for you to add as many drugs as you need)
  5. Click Save & Next to proceed to printing/faxing the prescription
  6. Sign the prescription with your mouse and click Save under the signature box to put it on the prescription (skip this step if your signature image is already populated on the Rx)
  7. Select either Print & Paste into EMR or Fax & Paste into EMR

STEP 1- SEARCH FOR DRUG

  1. In the box beside ‘Drug Name:’ type in the name of the drug you want to prescribe.  After a few letters the appropriate choices appear in a drop down list (TIP –  you can narrow your search by picking the unique part of the drug name and the dose.  For example “torva 20” will quickly find you Atorvastatin 20MG TAB).
  2. Click on the SEARCH button if you want selections of brand and trade names as well as drug classes to choose from.

TIPS:

  • For prescription recommendations for certain diagnoses, click the ‘Drug of Choice’ link to the right of the box labeled Drug Name.
  • The Note function lets you write free text on the prescription without quantity and repeats such as “Tennis Elbow Brace”
  • For compounding drugs and mixtures such as 2% Hydrocortisone and 1/4% Menthol in Glaxal base use the custom drug function (detailed below)

I Can’t Find the Drug I’m Looking For

  1. If you can’t find the drug you are looking for you can add one in free form style. Just select the button that says “Custom Drug”
  2. The warning screen will appear
  3.  Fill in the information needed.

STEP 2- WRITE THE PRESCRIPTION

  1. The writing area will expand to give you a space to fill in the instructions quantity and repeats for the medication
  2. Did you forget your usual medication instructions? click on the red * and you will be given a pick list of your instructions to choose from. You can also select the ? in the yellow thought box.  This will bring up the Instructions Field References Tab.
  3. Click off the Long Term Med check box as appropriate. If Long Term Med is checked off, the drug in question will appear every time you create a prescription for the patient.
  4. A lot of natural language will be recognized when inserting prescription instructions. The Quantity and Duration will be filled out for you according to the list that shows up when you click the ? in the yellow thought box.
  5. If the quantity and the duration fields are filled improperly you can type them in manually.  To activate the duration field click on it as shown above and the focus will switch to where you can enter numbers.  Click on the Unit label to change or enter the duration unit.  You can change the character duration unit to either (D)ays (W)eeks or (M)onths.
  6. To add additional drugs to the same prescription, simply start typing the drug name into the “Drug Name:” field. If no additional drugs need to be added, proceed to printing or faxing the prescription.  Click”Save And Print” to print/fax the Rx* (see STEP 3 below).  Clicking just “Save” only saves the drug in the record, without printing/faxing it.
*The ‘Save And Print’ button has been renamed to ‘Save & Next‘ for clarity since OSCAR build 19-35~1182. Save & Next is a better term as you also have the option to fax (it’s not just print anymore).

STEP 3- PRINT THE PRESCRIPTION

    1. The final screen brings up selections to print the patients prescription. This screen is accessed by clicking the “Save & Next” button.
    2. If you forgot something or want to go back and edit the Rx, you can click on Edit Rx to return to the previous screen and edit/add drugs to the Rx
    3. Use Additional Notes to add comments, e.g. Deliver to home or Easy Open Vials. Click Add to Rx and this message will be added to the Rx above the signature.
    4. TIP: if you are mouse signing you may want to enter a few blank lines after the Additional Notes to ensure that the signature does not overlay the Notes
    5. The Drug Information link gives you the ability to consult a monograph or patient information on the drug(s) listed
    6. OPTIONAL Mouse SIGNING & FAXING Rx (depending on what you have configured)
      NOTE: If you have a signature image file saved in the images folder (consult_sig_YourProviderNo.png), your signature image will auto-populate on prescriptions so you won’t need to follow the below steps on signing (the signature box won’t even show if you have your signature image file saved).

      1. First, ensure that the patient has a pharmacy with a fax number set
      2. Add Pharmacy Info will add (alongside the Rx) the patient’s preferred Pharmacy information for printing (e.g. if you want the prescription to only be filled at a specific pharmacy – useful for controlled substances etc.)
      3. Use your mouse or trackpad to sign in the signature box
      4. Click ‘Save‘ to enable the Fax option (if the patient has a Pharmacy set). The fax option is grayed-out by default until you sign the prescription.
      5. Then, the prescription will have the signature on it like this:
      6. Click on ‘Fax & Paste into EMR‘ and the Rx will be faxed to the patient’s preferred pharmacy OR click ‘Print & Paste into EMR‘ to just print the prescription.

RePrescribing

You may want to represcribe (ReRx) one or several previously-prescribed medications for a patient. Using the ReRx feature will save you time from manually re-entering each medication you want to represcribe.

To ReRx just one medication:

  • Just click ReRx next to the medication you want to represcribe:
  • Click Save & Next (see STEP 3- PRINT THE PRESCRIPTION)

To ReRx Multiple Medications:

  • Check the boxes for the medications you want to represcribe under the Represcribe column
  • Click the ReRx link next to any of the checkboxes you checked
  • Click Save & Next (see STEP 3- PRINT THE PRESCRIPTION)Allergies

If you write an Rx for something that the patient has a listed allergy, you will be informed at the drug selection stage.

NOTE: For example if you wanted to write Clavulin(R) for someone who is listed as being allergic to Penicillin then the flag will come up in Red.  This is not a substitute for one’s professional obligation to independently review allergies, nor will the program prevent you from printing the prescription if that is what you feel is the clinically most appropriate course.

Need to Add a Special Instruction?

After you have searched and selected a drug, you can click on “Instructions” in the prescription box , a text box for typing special instruction will appear. If you click on “Instructions” again, the text box will close.


TIP: A quicker way to invoke special instruction text box is to press the “Enter ” key when you finished typing in the “Instruction” text box.While you are typing, a list of known special instructions are displayed for user to choose.

Re prescribe all long term drugs at once

Click on “Re-prescribe Long Term Meds” on the search page, all long term drugs will appear.

Alternately enter the perscriber by clicking on the “+” on the prescription header

Discontinue a drug

  1. Click on “Discon”  (on the right side drug name).
  2. Select the reason for discontinuing the drug and add any comment if needed.

Difference between an empty note and a written note to a prescription

By clicking on the notepad, a user can write and save a note to a prescription. When the page is loaded next time, the note shows up to help user remember which prescription has been noted.

Adding  a favorite drug

  1. Search and select a drug.
  2. Click on the “F”  OR Click on “more” after a prescription box appears and click on “Add to Favorite” and type a short name for your favorite drug.
  3. Enter the Name on the screen pop up
  4. Select OK
  5. Finish the rest of the RX as you normally would.

Adding an Allergy

  • Click on “+” sign beside “Active Allergies” in the left side bar.
  • Add an allergy in the same way as the old prescription module.

Generating multiple-page PDF prescription document in different page sizes

  1. After a prescription is made by clicking the “Save & Print” button, a preview window will appear.
  2. You can choose to generate either A4 or A6 size pdf for your prescription.
  3. Click on “Print PDF” to download the generated prescription pdf file.
  4. Select Close Window to exit prescription.

Setting personal preferences

All these can all be found through the main patient appointment screen “Preferences” tab link.  More detail is found in the Preferences page

Setting Default Quantity for Prescriptions

    1. Click on “Set Default Quantity” link at top of the page. A small window pops up which allows you to modify default quantity.
    2. Enter your desired quantity and click “Save” button and close the window. Next time when you make a new prescription of a drug which was not used by the patient before, the default quantity will appear in the “Quantity” text box in the prescription table.
    3. Select Save to save your changes
    4. Select Update when you are finished

Set default size of prescription PDF document

    1. Click on “Set Rx Script Page Size” link and a window with a drop-down list will pop up.
    2. Select the size you desire (A4 or A6) and click “Save” button and close the window. This size will be chosen automatically before you generate the PDF document next time.
    3. Select Update

Set to use Rx3 by an individual provider

Click on “Set to use RX3” link

    1. Select checkbox if you want to use RX3, Un-select if you don’t want to use RX3
    2. Submit
    3. Update
